Lesson 21: Food Is Your Fuel

BeeActive says: "Kyle grabbed leftover pizza instead of the chicken, rice, and veggies his mom made. So I told him: Your body is like a machine, and food is your fuel. The energy in food is measured in calories. Think of calories as small energy packets that power everything you do: running, playing, learning, even gaming!"

"Foods like fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean meats give you just the right packets. Treats like candy, cake or a juicy burger have lots more packets than you need, and too many can make you feel sluggish. Treats aren't bad. They're special add-ons, not your main fuel."

Your mission: Fuel Sort

  1. Look in your kitchen with a grown-up.
  2. Find 3 main fuel foods (example: apples, eggs, brown rice).
  3. Find 3 add-on treats (example: cookies, chips, soda).
  4. Draw them in two columns: "Main Fuel" and "Add-Ons."

Level-up challenge: At your next meal, name which foods on your plate are main fuel.

Power-up fact: Your brain uses about a fifth of your body's energy, even while you sleep.
